America is facing a national governing crisis. Congress rarely tackles the most important legislative issues facing the country, focusing instead on winning political majorities in the legislative branch.

Today, most lawmakers do not spend the time building relationships with members of the opposing party or developing subject-matter expertise related to their committees and constituents.

Instead, members of Congress are incentivized to spend up to 30 hours a week raising money, talking to a narrow set of deep-pocketed donors or special interests, who also fund outside groups and “dark money” organizations to discourage political courage and fuel dysfunction in Washington.

Additionally, America’s political system remains riddled with loopholes and has not been updated in decades. The laws in place were passed before Americans could donate online, through a text message or with a smartphone.

Standards and institutions in the federal government are under constant threat, from the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) that oversees ethical standards in the U.S. House of Representatives to the Office of Government Ethics (OGE) which is tasked with overseeing executive branch appointees.

It is time to get democracy humming again. We know there are solutions that work. America only thrives when everyone’s ideas are heard and people are empowered to engage in democracy, political discourse and do their civic duty
